Holy Trinity church, Blythburgh

The Holy Trinity church in Blythburgh has relatively new, wooden benches, probably the result of a restauration. They have magnificent bench-ends which depict the seven deadly sins, the seven works of mercy and the four seasons. They were made by ocal woodcarvers around 1475.

The side aisle of the church again shows the bright illumination, in spite of the rather dark ceiling. Note also that the roof and the clerestory are supported by slender supports; no need for heavy pillars that obstruct the view. The rood screen formed the separation for a space for children; when we were there it was used for a meeting, apparently of a church committee.

The church is not far from Snape, home to The Maltings on the Alde river, and the site of the famous annual Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts. Music performances are also carried out in neighbouring churches, such as those of Blythburgh. This was also the case when the Maltings were on fire.
