Eye, Suffolk

St Peter and St Paul of Eye

Eye was a municipal town, temporarily even a «rotten borough». It lost this status in 1974 but retained its Mayor.

The town is dominated by the St Peter and St Paul church. The large tower with its corner steeples and its battlements is characteristic of East Anglia: stone and a pattern made out of flint found on adjacent land or in quarries. This is not only an attractive style, it is also cheaper than carved stone. After all, proper stone for building purposes is not to be found in East Anglia, and transportation of stone from elsewhere costs a fortune.

The red brick structure is the De la Pole porch, named after the rich and dominant family.
