About Butley, Suffolk, and about East Aglia

View of Tangham Campsite from our tent.

Tangham Campsite near Butley is in a green area. The site itself, which we visited in 1991, was quite large and quiet. It had showers, toilets and washing facilities which were reasonably kempt. There was a small shop, a washing machine and you could get hot water for dish washing and the like. It was an unexpectedly beautiful camping site.

The surroundings were quite remarkable. The hurricane that hit England with ferocious force in 1989, had uprooted an unprecedented number of trees. That led to a landscape where empty and rough areas alternated with strips of trees or larger wooded areas that had remained intact. Areas stripped of trees had been taken over by beautiful ferns, some heather, fireweed, dill in various places, the occasional fast-growing birch, etc. New deciduous trees had been planted, such as the oak. That gave the landscape an interesting flavour, as the afforestation was protected from wildlife, which was there in sufficient numbers, by beige-brown cylinders around the stem. We spotted many deer, including fallow deer, and rabbits. The protective cylinders would light up in the sunlight. Along the roads beautiful rowan trees heavily laden with berries.
