Description - The Blackeyed Bulbul has a dark brown crest and upper part, and no "eye ring". The underparts are grey-brown apart from white around the vent. Its back is greyish brown, breast is dark brown. The undertail is a yellow colour, with a long tail. The male and female look similar.
Some authorities consider Pycnonotus barbatus dodsoni and Pycnonotus barbatus tricolor as separate species from the Pycnonotus barbatus barbatus.
Distribution - They are found on the eastern side of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Eastern Botswana and Northern Namibia, but also in South Asia, Japan and Arabia.
Habitat - Mainly found in evergreen forests, bush and parks, but not in dense forest and treeless expanses. They are found in groups and frequent suburban gardens.
Biological - It is a ubiquitous resident breeder throughout Africa. This bird is quite adaptable and easily lives alongside humans. It can become quite tame and can be taught to take fruit from a bird feeder in the garden.
Most of the time Common Bulbuls are seen in pairs.
The flight is bouncing. They are very vocal and very good singers; they call loudly when alarmed by a predator. About 18 cm in length.
Diet - They forage in trees picking fruit and insects from the leaves.
Breeding - The nest is a neat cup made of twigs and grass and spiderwebs, and lined with hair or soft materials, built in the bush or on tree branches. A clutch of 3 (2-5) eggs is incubated by the female for about 12 days. Both parents feed the young until they leave the nest after about 16 days.
Voice - The call is described as a loud 'doctor-quick doctor-quick be-quick be-quick', a sharp 'kwit-kwit-kwit' when alarmed, and the song as a flowing 'cheloop chreep choop'.
